No Road deaths or serious injuries by 2050 - not at this rate
The primary aim of the government’s new road safety strategy is to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by 50% over the next 10 years. However, road deaths are increasing despite the strategy.
On the 26th of February 2024, Ireland experienced its 35th fatal car crash since the start of the year.
According to the RSA:
‘Provisional road traffic collision figures show that the number of road deaths in 2023 increased by 19% compared to 2022.
A total of 184 people died in 173 fatal collisions in 2023 compared to 155 deaths in 149 collisions in 2022. This represents an increase of 29 deaths or a 19% rise in road deaths compared to last year’.
Under the Vision 0 strategy, 2024 road deaths need to reduce to 122 or fewer, and eight serious injuries to 1,133 or fewer by the end of the year. The current rate of fatalities means Ireland is on track to exceed the total number of road deaths and the strategy is set to fail.
